It isn't often we see such cooperation among county agencies as we did at Monday's Atmore City Council meeting.
The council, the Atmore Utilities Board and the Escambia County Commission are working together to bring sewer service to an area near Atmore. Looking at a map, one would question how the county got involved in this in the first place, but the area is just a hair outside Atmore's city limits.
The county received a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) from the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA) to provide service to 62 households. The commission approached the council about helping with $58,000 in matching funds. This was during the previous administration.
Former Mayor Rodney Owens and the council were anxious to help but were advised that the city was legally prohibited from participating. However, the next city administration learned that the city's utilities board could participate.
At Monday's meeting, Commissioner Wiley Tait and County Administrator Tony Sanks were on hand to express the county's appreciation.
Through cooperation, we can accomplish much. And there is much to be done.
