The Northview Lady Chiefs have started the season on a roll and on Thursday they gained even more momentum as they ran over the Lady Cougars of Escambia Academy, 5-0.
The pitching arm of Stephanie Hayes once again led the way to victory as she threw a complete game, allowing only one hit while striking out 12 Lady Cougars.
NHS Head Coach Sammy Day said he had planned on working his starting pitcher for only a few innings, but the hustle of the EA players forced him to reconsider.
The game remained scoreless as the teams entered the third inning. Northview scored first in the bottom of that inning and then added two more in the fourth to take a 3-0 lead. They scored two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to complete the scoring.
Hayes also played well at the plate as she led the Lady Chiefs' offense by going two for four with two RBI. Amanda Bolen was the only other NHS batter to get multiple hits as she went two for three.
Hayes, who has pitched in every NHS game so far this season, has a 6-1 record.
The Chiefs are also 6-1.
NHS 9, Baker 0
For the second time in two weeks, Stephanie Hayes dominated opposing batters as she continuously sat down the opposition and earned another no-hitter as the Northview Lady Chiefs blanked Baker High School, 9-0.
In a key district game, Northview jumped on top early and let Hayes do the rest. The Lady Chiefs scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning and another in the second to take a 5-0 lead. They added one in the fourth, two in the fifth and completed the scoring with one more run in the sixth inning.
In her complete game, Hayes struck out 14 Baker batters.
She also enjoyed a fine day at the plate as she went three for four and scored two runs. Elizabeth Wiggins went two for five with a double, Kay Spence was two for four with a triple and two RBI and Heather Jernigan went two for four with a double and two RBI.
The victory gives the Chiefs a 2-0 record within their district. The team with the best district record during the regular season will get a bye during the first round of the district tournament.
The Lady Chiefs will travel to Baldwin County High School on Monday, Central High School on Thursday, followed by a likely matchup between Hayes and Escambia County High School's ace Melissa Jones on Friday in Atmore.
