Atmore's population is greater than that of Brewton and Flomaton combined, according to recently released Census Bureau figures.
The 2000 census shows Atmore's population at 7,676, with Brewton at 5,498, and Flomaton at 1,588.
Of Atmore's 7,676 residents, 5,646 are age 18 and over.
In addition to population, the data released last week reflect the race composition of the city. Of Atmore's 7,676 residents, 7,606 people responded on the census form that they are one race:
White – 3,798
Black or African American – 3,555
American Indian and Alaska Native – 185
Asian – 36
Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander – 4
Some other race – 28
Seventy individuals responded that they were two or more races.
Of the white population (3,798), 54.9 percent or 3,098 are 18 and over. Of the black population (3,555), 41.1 percent or 2,320 are 18 and over.
Atmore's 2000 population figures show a decline from the 8,046 reported at the last census in 1990.
While extensive figures are available from the 1990 census, the comparable 2000 figures will not be released until April and May, according to the bureau's release schedule.
The population figures cited above are part of the redistricting data provided by the bureau to Gov. Don Siegelman and the majority and minority leaders of the state legislature. This data may be used to redraw federal, state and local legislative districts.
Census data reflect the population shift from one decade to the next, and redrawing district lines assures equal representation with the one person, one vote principle of the 1965 Voting Rights Act. (See related story on page 3.)
The 2000 census figures for Escambia County show the population at 38,440, with 29,170 age 18 and over.
Census information is available online at www.census.gov. The website keeps a running total of the population in this country and in the world.
