I was reminded Monday evening that hard work doesn't have to be a chore. When you are working with good friends for a cause everyone believes in, hard work can be a lot of fun.
I am referring to The Atmore Advance's Relay For Life team's pancake supper.
I have heard a lot about the supper since my arrival in Atmore last summer and now I know why everyone enjoys it so much. Sure, it was hot in the kitchen and our feet were getting tired from a long day. But, somehow it never felt like work.
Luckily, I had experience in the pancake industry. In my high school days I would wake up before daylight and open up the local McDonalds in my hometown. That has been 12 years ago so I was a little rusty. That was why it was easy to tell which cakes were mine – they typically resembled animal shapes rather than a full moon.
We had a lot of help from a lot of people to make our pancake supper a success. Our entire team would like to thank Robert Fairclothe Sr., Terrence Breckenridge and everyone at David's Catfish House for graciously donating their facilities for one evening. Without it, our biggest fundraising event would never have happened.
Also helping us through the evening was a group of young Atmoreans who worked extremely hard and served as a great example for others – both young and old. My special thanks go to Chris Graham, Stephanie Brown, Mitchell Brown, Kyle Kirby and Clay Kirby. Their devotion to the cause is admirable and their energy served as inspiration for us old-timers.
But, the success of the event is reflected directly by the support we received from the community. You opened up your hearts, and wallets, to help find a cure for cancer. We hope everyone enjoyed their meal enough to consider doing it again next time.
The pancake supper was just the beginning for The Press Crew. We are planning several other fundraisers with hopes they will be as fun, and successful, as the supper.
We aren't the only team getting into the spirit of Relay season.
Other teams are busy preparing for, and hosting, their own unique fundraisers. Let's all get out and support each of these teams as they are all our allies in the battle against cancer.
