Atmore Industrial Development Board Chairman Bob Jones took exception to a recent comment by Mayor Howard Shell concerning disposal of the old Kmart building.
At the April 9, 2001 council meeting, the council voted to put the building on the market. In the April 11 edition of The Atmore Advance, Shell was quoted as saying, "Since we've had no recommendations from the Industrial Development Board for a use for the building, I recommend we put this building up for sale and get our money back."
At last Thursday's IDB meeting, Jones said he felt it necessary, for the record, to clarify the board's actions and initiatives. He issued a written statement to Shell and board members Keith Castleberry, Peggie Byrd, Brad Price and Jim Johnson.
Shell asked, "Before we put this building up for sale, is the Y interested?"
Castleberry said he was meeting with the Y board following the IDB meeting.
Jones said the IDB had received inquiries about the building but was not able to respond to those inquiries due to the status of the building.
In his statement, Jones recounted the board's actions regarding the building.
