Siegleman: Ice box governor

To the editor:
Ice box governor? Every day Gov. Don Siegelman presents a new program that in his opinion will save Alabama. The main thing about his proposals is that he seems to be like the old ice box ads of "bait and switch," hoping that the public will buy one on the other plan!
We have heard of toll roads for years. Roads to nowhere! First there was to be one from Birmingham to Dothan. Next there was talk of one the east side of the Alabama River coming from the Gulf of Mexico to be an evacuation route. The most recent argument has been to bring a route through Atmore, Brewton or Flomaton. The strange thing about this is all of these routes are already in place, have been for over 30 years. Yes, improvement is needed but not at the cost to the citizens when it only would help developers along the routes.
All of these seemingly died on the vine, and their cost would have been chicken feed compared to a road from Muscle Shoals to the Gulf! Besides, who would such a road help? Developers again? Could it be that it would be a fast road to the gambling houses that are presently to the west of Mobile which have Mobile owners?
Now to get down to the nuts and bolts of the multi-million dollar expense of just surveying and legal cost of such a road. Then just who will get the contracts to do these contracts? Some bid laws need revising before anything else is done with taxpayers dollars!
Legislators, beware of any further big deals taking place from the governor's office.
Speak up, Alabama! Ask questions!
Sincerely,
Maston M. Mims Sr.
Former state senator
