Local players shine in Mayfest tennis tourney

Local players represented Atmore well in the annual Mayfest Tennis Tournament last weekend at Tom Byrne Park.
Eleven players from Atmore made the finals in both singles and doubles play.
Ross Terry, of Atmore, made it to the final match in men's singles A, but he had to settle for second place as Jerry Carpenter of Flomaton took home the victory by a 6-1, 6-2 score.
In men's singles B, another Atmore native came in second as Randall Adams took a final-round loss, 6-2; 6-3, to Joah Norris of Monroeville.
Men's singles C was won by Lucas Blackwell of Brewton who came back after a first set defeat to Atmore's David Gehman. The set scores were 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.
In doubles, Walter DeWitt of Flomaton and Merrill Ledford of Atmore took the men's doubles A category with a victory over Mark Worthy of Mobile and Robert Johnson of Pensacola, 6-1, 6-0.
Merrill Ledford and John Strahle of Atmore won the men's doubles B with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Wesley Pennington and Billy Madison of Atmore.
In the men's doubles C group, Randall Adams and Mitchell Adams of Atmore took care of Harold Parker and Jason Parker of Atmore with a 6-3, 6-0 victory.
Mark Worthy of Mobile and Sonya Rodgers of Loxley came back from a first-game loss to win the mixed doubles A group. They defeated Bobby Hood of Monroeville and Pat Hendrix of Frisco City, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.
In mixed doubles B, Kenny Hedgepeth of Monroeville and Pat Hendrix of Frisco City defeated Kristen Brown and Joah Norris, both of Monroeville, 6-1; 6-2.
