The Atmore City Council voted to apply for a Community Development Block Grant that could improve areas in the northeast part of town.
The council voted unanimously to apply for the grant that Mayor Howard Shell said could help in the continuation of paving and drainage work that was done with last year's CDBG grant.
Shell said the grant could involve $700,000 with $197,000 being matched from local revenues.
Other items discussed were:
the council voted to skip the next council meeting which would fall on Memorial Day. Shell said that at the current time there were items on the agenda for that meeting. He also said if any issues did arise a special meeting could be called.
the council approved a request by Jungle Aviation and Radio Service Aircraft, a missionary pilot service, to hold a fly-in at the Atmore airport to raise public awareness of the program.The vote was unanimous and the event is scheduled for June 2 and 3. The approval pends on proper insurance other paperwork that must be completed prior to the event.
the council voted to send a letter to MediaCom urging them to reconsider their decision to take religous programming off the system. Shell said several residents and ministers in the city have asked for the letter. The council members each signed the letter which will be mailed to MediaCom.
In a resolution, Councilman John Watkins asked that the letter also include a statement regarding customer service within the area. The letter will also invite the general manager of the cable system to Atmore for an upcoming council meeting.
the council was presented with a plague from the Atmore T-Ball League for their help and support throughout the T-ball season.
the council voted unanimously to approve the minutes from the April 23, 2001 regular meeting.
