Escambia Academy moved to 1-1 in area play last week with a win over Sparta Academy with a 40-14 win, and now they're hoping to do it again in front of a homecoming crowd Friday night when they take on area foes Cottage Hill.
EA's season has been tough so far, with the Cougars posting a 2-5 season. But despite the lackluster start, EA has seen extra life breathed into its offensive attack.
The addition of last week's starting quarterback Dustin Roberts led EA to move Kevin Adair into the backfield where he showed his prowess as a runner, netting 150 yards on 16 carries. Though Adair played tailback much of the night, he split time at the QB slot and tossed a 25-yard touchdown pass. Passing, he was 3-5 on the night for 54 yards.
Roberts' numbers were equally impressive. He netted 158 yards scrambling and threw for 36 yards. He was 2-6 passing.
The move allowed EA to move starting running back Sean Sirmon, who plays linebacker on defense, to the guard position where he beefed up support for the offense.
EA had a total of over 400 yards rushing and nearly 100 yards passing in the romping of Sparta.
EA hopes that last week's formula for success holds this week as they take to the field against Cottage Hill in the homecoming game for EA.
Cannon's team, while young, has afforded many younger athletes the chance to see plenty of playing time throughout the season as they continue their goal set earlier this year of "getting better every game."
Cannon believes his team has come a long way since opening night against Clarke Prep.
Game time is 7:30 Friday night, but homecoming festivities will begin early.
