Children are always involved in Williams Station Day, usually with the pumpkin decorating and carving contest and/or the children's art show.
This year, a new event has been added n the build-a-scarecrow contest. Unlike the pumpkin carving and art show, this event will be done at WSD.
There will be up to eight groups which are limited to six participants on the day of the contest. An unlimited number may be involved in advance planning, but only students in grade three through eight may participate in building their scarecrow.
Each group must have an adult sponsor who will be responsible for the participants on the day of the contest.
Each team will be given a bale of hay and challenged to build a scarecrow from materials that they themselves bring to the site. The contest begins at 10 a.m. and ends at 11 a.m.
To register, the sponsor must contact the Chamber of Commerce office, 368-3305, and submit the names of the participants, the name of the group, and remit the $15 registration fee. The deadline for registration is Friday, Oct. 26, 5 p.m.
A fee is charged because cash prizes will be awarded. If there are eight groups, the prizes will be as follows: first place, $60; second place, $30; third place, $20; fourth place, $10. If there are fewer than eight teams, the prizes will be adjusted accordingly. All registration fee money will be awarded in prizes.
The children's art show always attracts a lot of attention. The show is open to students in first through twelfth grade. Artwork is submitted through the schools. Ribbons will be awarded.
The pumpkin contest provides ones of the greatest outlets for creativity. All ages may participate. Entries by students in kindergarten through sixth grades should be painted. Entries by students and the seventh grade and older should be carved. Pumpkins will be divided into five categories according to the artist's age. If pumpkins are painted, the paint must be dry when they are brought to Williams Station Day. Cash prizes will be awarded in this event.

These three events will be held at the corner of Owens and Pensacola, on the railroad lot.
The pumpkin contest and build-a-scarecrow are sponspored by Central Farms Supply. Atmore Community Hospital and Maxwell, Haley, Castleberry Real Estate and Insurance are sponsoring the children's art contest.
