The drainage project along Owens Street hit Main Street Thursday. While the project may inconvenience local and through traffic, disruption on Main Street will create more headaches on Williams Station Day when hundreds of visitors come to Atmore.
Mayor Howard Shell said the project could not be halted in deference to WSD and the additional traffic.
"The company is under contract for a specified number of days to finish the work," Shell said. "We can't ask them to hold off, especially when they have good weather. They do have other jobs scheduled upon completion of this one."
The contractor did agree to make some allowances, according to Shell. No more than the necessary materials will be brought in and piled up along the street. Where the work has been done, material will be picked up.
As for traffic flow, the contractor did get Trammell Street passable so that north-south traffic can flow freely around the Main and Owens intersection. Festival-goers coming from Highway 31 will be routed to Trammell and left on W. Horner beside First Baptist Church.
Friday, the project was moving into Main Street, inching toward Pensacola Avenue, the site of Williams Station Day, however, Project Manager Chuck Pickett said the work would not get as far as Pensacola Avenue before Oct. 27.
