Monday, experts were issuing an advisory that the skies over Atmore and West Escambia County could be covered with rain, sleet and snow throughout the day today as weather conditions were predicted to be cold and blustery.
Most of the rain and sleet are predicted to come throughout the day today when temperatures are expected to top out well above the freezing mark. Highs are projected to be in the mid-40s with lows dropping tonight into the mid-20s.
The day brings an 80 percent chance of rain, mixed at times with freezing rain, sleet and snow, though ground temperatures and external temperatures will likely turn the mixture to water throughout the day.
After dark, the likelihood of precipitation falls to 20 percent, but with temperatures falling into the 20s, any precipitation brings potential for danger on roadways.
The wind for the day is expected to be out of the north at 11 miles per hour, shifting in the afternoon to the come out of the northwest.
Residents are encouraged to bring pets, plants and other living valuables indoors during the cold weather today and tomorrow. Should rain fall with temperatures near the freezing mark, extra caution will be necessary on area roadways, particularly on bridges where freezing is more likely. Travel in freezing conditions should be avoided if possible.
Temperatures for Thursday are expected to remain cold, with a high in the low 40s and a low bottoming out just above the 20-degree mark. Sunshine is expected most of the day.
Less frigid temperatures will follow, with a high of near 50 expected Friday. Weekend highs will close in on the 60-degree mark while lows bottom out in the 40s. Partly cloudy to cloudy skies are expected most of the weekend.
