The Northview High School Chiefs finished off a week in which they went 1-1 with a loss against Central High School, 63-56, Thursday night in Northview.
Northview started off their week with a win against a very good Jay High School in Jay by 15 points, 62-47.
Northview was in control of the Jay game from the start. The Chiefs jumped out to 9-8 lead after the first quarter and never relinquished it.
Both teams had good offensive showings in the second quarter. The Chiefs outscored Jay 19-11 for the quarter however to take a 27-20 lead into half-time.
Jay trimmed down the Chiefs lead in the third quarter by outscoring the Chiefs 12-10 on their way to slicing Northview's lead by two points, 37-32, heading into the final quarter.
The Chiefs put away any thoughts of a comeback Jay had when they outscored them 25-15 for the quarter to get the win, 62-47.
"Any time you go into Jay it is going to be a hard game to win, " Northview Chiefs Head Coach Cliff Gillis said. "And I am proud of our boys for stepping up and winning big."
Daryl Cohen lead the Chiefs in points with 21 on the night. Jason Gillis followed with 16 on the night. Terrance Grice also had 13 points for the Chiefs.
The Chiefs next game was against Central High School. The Chiefs could not pull out a win in this game however, as they were defeated by Central 63-56.
"The key to this game was free-throws, " Coach Gillis said. "They took three times as many foul shots as we did and they made theirs and we did not."
"We had a chance to win the game at the end put we could not make any of our shots," Gillis said. "We missed four foul shots in a row and that really hurt us."
Central was awesome from the free-throw line. They shot 72% from the line on 21/29 shooting. The Chiefs were horrible however from the line, as they shot 50% from the line on 5/10 shooting.
"Another big reason we did not win was because we were missing one of our key starters in Terrance Grice," Gillis said.
"Another reason was because we had three players foul out down the stretch, and we could not make the shots we needed too to win, " Gillis said.
Daryl Cohen lead the Chiefs in points with 15 points on the night. Mendell Smith followed with 14 points, and Jason Gillis also had 11 points on the night.
The Chiefs next game will be against the Escambia Academy Cougars on Monday night in Northview. Gametime will be set for 4:00, and the game will be for J.V. and varsity teams.
