The Escambia County High School Blue Devils Junior Varsity Baseball team began their week on Wednesday night with a 12-6 loss to Flomaton High School Hurricanes in Atmore.
The Devils could only manage three hits for the entire game against some very good Hurricanes pitching. The three hits were the Devils lowest hitting output of the year.
The Hurricanes got the scoring started in the top of the first inning, as they managed to score three runs to take a three run lead, 3-0, heading into the bottom of the first inning.
The Devils managed to get one of those runs back in the bottom of the first inning, as they scored one run to trim the Hurricanes lead down to 3-1.
Neither team would score again in the second and third innings, but in the bottom of the fourth inning the Devils would get started again. The Devils scored four runs in the inning to take control of the lead, 5-3 heading into the top of the fifth inning.
The Devils did not have their lead for long though, as the Hurricanes took the lead right back with a three run fifth inning to earn the lead back at 6-5.
Neither team would score again in the fifth inning, but the Hurricanes blew the game wide open in the top of the seventh inning with a seven-run inning that extended their lead to 12-5.
The Blue Devils could only manage one run in the bottom of the seventh inning, so the Hurricanes pulled out the victory 12-6.
Micheal Rolin and Micheal Harrison lead the Blue Devils on offense. They both went 1/2 at the plate, while Rolin would also score one run.
Trevor Daughtry and Jeremy Rolin also had good days at the plate for the Devils. Daughtry went 1/3 at the plate with one run scored, while Rolin went 1/2 at the plate with one run scored.
Chris Graham, Ronnie Pettway , and Trevor Daughtry all pitched for the Devils in the loss. Graham pitched four innings, Pettway pitched pitched 2 1/3, and Daughtry pitched 2/3 of an inning. They all combined for seven hits, six walks, 12 runs, four hits batsmen, and five strikeouts. Graham got the loss on mound.
The Devils next game was a heart-breaking 5-4 loss to Monroeville High School on Friday night in Monroeville.
The loss by the Devils gave them a season split with Monroeville. They are split at 1-1 game apiece. The Blue Devils won the first game in Atmore, while Monroeville won the second game.
The game started off slowly for both teams as neither team would score in the first inning. But in the second inning, the Devils would start the scoring with a boom, as they scored four runs to take a hard-earned four run lead, 4-0, heading into the bottom of the second inning.
Monroeville would manage to score one run in the bottom of the third inning to trim the Devils lead down to 4-1 heading into the top of the fourth inning.
Neither team would score in the fifth inning, as both pitchers shut down the opposing teams offense.
But in the fifth inning ,just as the Devils thought that they had the game won, Monroeville exploded with five four runs in the final inning to steal the victory away from the Devils and claim it for their own 5-4.
Micheal Harrison lead the Devils at the plate, as he went 1/2 at the plate with one run scored and one RBI. Clint Burkett and Josh Montel also had good days at the plate for the Devils. Burkett went 1/2 at the plate with one run scored, while Montel went 1/3 at the plate with one RBI.
Norris Brooks got the loss on the mound for the Devils. He pitched all five innings: allowing only five hits, three walks, four runs, and had an amazing 10 strikeouts.
The Junior Varsity's next game will be against Flomaton High School on Thursday April 18. Gametime will be at 4:00 and admission will be $3.00.
