With the coming of May, it can mean only one thing in Atmore: it's Mayfest time.
The Atmore Area Chamber of Commerce is again sponsoring this annual event along with Pepsi Cola Bottling Company.
"We're looking forward to this year's events," said Emilie Mims, chamber director.
This year's Mayfest logo is special to Mims, she said.
"We chose a design with a butterfly and caterpillar," Mims said. "Our inspiration was that Atmore was going through a period of metamorphosis, just like a caterpillar. It's the hope of the chamber and of those working to attract industries to our community that this change will be for the betterment of all of our citizens, and Atmore will blossom into a butterfly."
Professor Zounds, a zany children's comedian, will be featured all day long, as well as country western singer Ronny Miller.
Miller's appearance is being sponsored by Poarch Creek Indian Enterprises.
Also providing entertainment throughout the day will be the Atmore Dance Company, the Smartlinks Jazz Band, Atmore Community Band and the Shades of Time country-western band.
Events already announced for this year's festival include:
the first-annual Mutt-Strutt dog-dress up contest at 1:15 p.m.
the Beautiful Baby Contest at 9:30 p.m.
The Beautiful Baby Contest is sponsored by the Walnut Hill Children's Medical Center. Applications are available at the chamber office located at the Lions Community Center.
arts and crafts and tons of other entertainment.
