The Look Good…Feel Better program helps many area women suffering during cancer treatment to feel better about themselves. The goal of the program is to help women to get better and to help them look good as well.
During chemotherapy or radiation treatments, many women undergo temporary changes in their appearance that accompany the treatments. The American Cancer Society instituted the Look Good…Feel Better program to help women feel better about their appearance during the treatments.
Some of the topics covered in the classes include caring for your skin, caring for your cosmetics, caring for your nails, new hair looks, wig care, and several accessories like wraps and hats. It covers many ways to accessories your wardrobe to help you feel good about yourself.
The Look Good…Feel Better program enlists volunteers from the community to conduct the classes for the women. Jean Daniels and Sharee Shivers from Jean Daniels' Beauty Salon are some of the volunteers for this area.
There is also a loan closet available at the hospital and at Poarch.
While the program is provided free of charge, there are still expenses to be met. The biggest fund-raiser for the American Cancer Society is The Relay for Life. Most of the money raised locally stays local and some of it is used to fund this program.
A class was held Monday afternoon at the Atmore Community Hospital auditorium. Dot Lowke, Jeanne Baggett, Estelle Watts and Virginia Watts were on hand to participate. Judy Pylate, chairperson for the Atmore Relay for Life, and a cancer survivor, was the model for the demonstration.
