The Greater Escambia Council for the Arts will be bringing yet another outstanding community theater event to Atmore.
Auditions for the production of the musical Oliver, written by Lionel Bart and based on the Charles Dickens novel Oliver Twist, will be held Sunday, May 26, at 2 PM in the Atmore Lions Community Center.
The play tells the story of Oliver, an orphan who meets a host of seedy characters in 19th century London in his search for a home of his own.
Director Phil Johnson says that the production will require over 130 people. "We're going to use everybody," he says. "We can really fit as many people as we need to into it." Besides Oliver and the other principle characters, the play requires workhouse orphans, Fagin's boys, and numerous singers, dancers, chorus members, and extras. Parts will be selected on three levels of audition-singing, dancing, and acting. Anyone interested in a singing role will need to sing a short selection and should bring their own accompaniment. Those auditioning for the part of Oliver or one of Fagin's boys will be asked to perform a short dance routine that they will be shown at tryouts. All interested in speaking roles will read a short selection. There will be a Tuesday callback for all parts remaining undecided after Sunday's auditions.
