A Tennessee man injured in a one-vehicle accident late Sunday night outside of Atmore is listed in guarded/critical but stable condition Tuesday.
Denver Arp of Old Fort, Tenn., according to his wife was severely injured after he allegedly fell asleep at the wheel of his 1993 Chevy while traveling south on I-65.
Arp left the road near the 51-mile marker at around 9:00 p.m. and crossed into the median, where his vehicle overturned.
Arp was ejected from the vehicle. According to his wife, Jeannette Arp, he was not wearing his seat belt.
Arp was transported by helicopter to USA Medical Center in Mobile. According to the AST, the helicopter landed on I-65.
When he arrived at USA, Jeannette said that Arp was in "really bad shape."
His condition, while it has changed quickly, is still serious.
As of Tuesday, Arp no longer required a ventilator and was breathing on his own.
Jeannette said that while her husband was awake and alert, at times he was somewhat despondent.
However, she is hopeful that his minor head injuries will heal quickly and completely.
According to Jeannette her husband had been driving heavily for the last few days and she believes it was the cause of his accident.
