Atmore summer activities abound

Wondering what to do this summer?
If you are, remember that there is plenty to do right here in Atmore.
Summer programs are plentiful, including opportunities for learning, shaping up and just plain out having fun.
The summer pools are always a favorite destination for the entire family to cool off.
This summer the two city pools are offering many exciting opportunities to relax as well as learn.
Houston Avery and Tom Byrne Park pools are both open for swimming lessons this summer.
Houston Avery lessons are Monday through Friday from 10-11:30 a.m. Tom Byrne will hold lessons from 9-10 a.m., 10-11 a.m. and 11 a.m.-noon. Afternoon classes at Houston Avery will be on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays beginning at 5 and at Tom Byrne on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-7 p.m.
Tom Byrne pool will also be offering Water Aerobics and diving classes. Aerobics classes are held each Tuesday and Thursday afternoon from 5-6 p.m. Cost is $2.50 per meeting.
The pools will also be open for anyone wanting to just cool off and take a swim.
Houston Avery's pool is open to the general public on Monday-Friday from 1-4 p.m. The pool is also open on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7-9 p.m. and on Saturdays and Sundays from 3-6 p.m.
Tennis classes are also being offered at Tom Byrne park. These classes meet Monday-Friday for one hour.

Still, plenty of other opportunities exist in Atmore for summer fun.
Baseball is big in Atmore, with several different leagues competing throughout the summer.
Both parks play host to a number of teams and leagues throughout the summer.
Poarch Creek Indian Reservation is sponsoring a T-Ball league continuing through August. For more information contact April Sells at 368-9136 x. 2333 or 2309.
Poarch is also sponsoring a rodeo club for children. Those interested should contact Sells for more information. Classes are currently being taught.
For less streneous activities, try these on for size:
The Strand Theater is another option for summer fun. Currently showing at the theater is Scooby Doo, based on the cartoon series.
Showings of Scooby Doo are at 7:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 7:00 and 9:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
In coming attractions is Men in Black II, which opens nationwide on July 3.
The Atmore Public Library kicked off its 2002 summer program, "Summer of Mystery," on June 18, regular program times will begin June 28 at 10:00 a.m.
The program is located on the second floor of the library and is open to children ages 5-12.

JDCC is offering summer classes for children and continuing education classes throughout the summer.
Basic Upholstery II classes and I will be taught on Tuesdays from 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. Upholstery I will be taught June 4, 11, 18, and 25, and Upholstery II will be taught July 9, 16, 23, and 30. The classes will be taught on the JDCC Atmore campus, and are limited to eight students. Tuition is $60 for each class.
These classes are available at the Brewton campus of JDCC:
Beginning golf for ages 7-11 will be taught from 8:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m.
Beginning golf for ages 12 and up will be taught from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.
Intermediate golf for ages 12 and up will be taught from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m.
