19-year-old Doris Troutman, daughter of Mrs. Carl Troutman, won the title of "Maid of Cotton" of Escambia County at the annual contest held in Atmore. Miss Troutman was adjudged winner over a field of eight beauties from Atmore, Flomaton, and Brewton at the annual meeting of the Escambia County Farm Bureau.
The Reverend Norman H. McCrummen, pastor of First Baptist Church of Atmore, gave a splendid address to the members of the Atmore Rotary Club warning them and through them as to what will become of America if this country's present mode of living. crime, lust and licentiousness continues.
Atmore Jaycees announced Wednesday that the 200th Infantry Division baseball team from Fort Jackson, SC will play the Atmore Jaycees on Wednesday night, August 6 at 8:00. This service team is made up of all professional ball players and the squad was the 1951 champion of all service teams in the nation.
Miss Minnie Hanks of Atmore has made the Dean's list in the School of Education, Dr. Doak S. Campbell, president of the Florida State University, announced this week. This honor is extended to students who maintain an over all grade average of B during the preceding semester.
Six scouts from Atmore spent a very exciting week at Camp Big Heart, Pensacola, Fla., and made a very good record for themselves. Many tests were passed an many more scouting skills were added to their already wide variety. Attending Camp Big Heart from Atmore were Davis Findley, J.L. Johnson, John Parker, Joe Webb, John Barnett, Bert Jones, all being members of the Troop 21, sponsored by the First Baptist Church of Atmore.

Following completion of his six month probationary period, acting Atmore police Chief Bill Smith was hired Monday as the city's police chief by the City Council, Smith has served as acting chief since Jan 15 when he replaced James R. Dixon who returned to his former position with the Escambia County Sheriff's Department.
Escambia and Monroe County cattlemen and dairy farmers have been declared eligible for emergency livestock feed assistance, U.S. Representative Jack Edwards said he has been notified. Congressman Edwards said the assistance can provide up to 50 percent subsidies on the purchase of feed and hay.
Escambia County's 1978 Maid of Cotton and Farm Bureau Queens will be chosen Thursday evening , August 4 during a pageant which will begin at 8 at the Flomaton High School auditorium. Contestants in the pageant will also appear in a cotton fashion show featuring garments made of cotton.
Life Flight, an around the clock emergency medical flight service using a helicopter will present a demonstration in Atmore Friday at 1:30 pm. The helicopter and emergency equipment will be located on the grass areas in front of City Hall fro the demonstration to which everyone is encouraged to attend.
Southland Telephone Co. of Atmore has been approved for a $3,135,000 loan from the Rural Electrification Administration. Company Manager Bill Corman said the loan will help the company continue and complete its efforts to convert all exchanges to one party service eliminating party lines and will help to provide additional services to phone company customers.

Giles D. Chapman Jr. has qualified to seek election to the Atmore City Council District 1. Chapman is retired from McKesson Drug Co. where he worked as a wholesale drug salesman.
More than 10 years of working and planning and pleading for a water system may soon reap benefits fro the residents of the Robinsonville community. The water system will consist of 83,200 feet of six-inch water line, 81,800 feet of three-inch water line, one fire hydrant and 28 flush hydrants.
Members of the Atmore city council continued their bumpy ride over the resurfacing issue at Monday afternoon's meeting. No action was taken on the proposed $600,000 paving project, pending another workshop with council members and Brad Price, senior vice president and trust officer at First National Bank who handles the city's investments.
More than 50 citizens jammed the commission chambers Monday to vehemently protest the proposed subtitle D landfill which would be located near their property off Highway 41 near the Escambia-Conecuh line. But the commission has long since approved the landfill and the proposal is now in Montgomery waiting word from the Alabama Department of Environmental Management.
Gary Donaldson has qualified to run for a seat on the Atmore city council in District 1. Donaldson, a native and life long resident of Atmore graduated from Escambia County High School in 1974 and entered the U.S. Air Force fro six years of service at that time. He has been active in youth programs in Atmore for the last nine years.
