Grant seeks Pardon
According to the Mobile Register, a former Atmore police officer is seeking a pardon for his conviction in a 1988 burglary and assault charge.
David Keith Grant was given a 40-year sentence and a restitution fine of $100,000 following his conviction in the attack.
He is now asking the state Pardon and Parole board to throw out the conviction.
His victim, Jeff Hill, was paralyzed from the waist down after he was beaten and shot in the abdomen. According to District Attorney Mike Godwin, Grant aimed the pistol at Hill's head, but the pistol jammed.
Grant's accomplice, Mike Vaughn, who was also an Atmore police officer at the time, plead guilty and received a 10-year sentence.
Grant has been released on parole.
Godwin said his office has sent an official notice to the state parole and pardon board asking the board deny Grant's request for a pardon.
If Grant is pardoned, officials are unsure whether he will be forced to pay the $100,000 in restitution.
Fire in Byrneville
A fire in the Byrneville community has left one family homeless.
Kevin and Felicia Waters' home was destroyed by fire last weekend.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
A benevolence fund has been established at Pen-Air Credit union in Century, Fla.
