Students at Huxford Elementary School on Monday got a special treat, learning a new kind of C.P.R. during an interactive program at the school.
Escambia County Sheriff Tim Hawsey presented the Children Practicing Respect (C.P.R.) Program to the students at Huxford, and will be presenting similar programs to students throughout the Atmore area during the rest of the week.
The interactive program – set up much like an IMAX Theater with three large projection screens – teaches students how to develop and have respect for themselves, others, adults, their community and their environment. The C.P.R. program is geared toward students in elementary school.
A similar program, entitled "A Choice of One," is geared toward middle school and high school age students. That program teaches and shows students how just one decision can affect their entire life.
Hawsey said the program is sponsored by his department, Atmore's Pespi Cola distributor and from monies received from the Children's First Program. He also recently learned that Escambia County is the only county in the State of Alabama to conduct such a program for its schools.
The program is developed by a company out of San Antonio, Texas.
The interactive program features music videos, movie clips from popular Disney movies, a performance by pop singer Aaron Carter and clips from various sporting events. A number of popular movie, television and sports stars are featured throughout the program.
Hawsey said his department has been presenting the program for at least 20 years now, the entire time of his tenure as sheriff of the county.
The program normally runs in the spring time, but was moved to November this year to allow Hawsey one final chance to present it before leaving office.
