County Commissioners Larry White, James Hall, and Wiley Tait met with Poarch Creek Tribal Chairman Eddie Tullis on Tuesday to discuss the future of Jack Springs Road.
The commissioners, along with the Poarch Creek Indians, have unsuccessfully petitioned the state of Alabama to take over maintainence of the road and have it declared a state highway, based on the road having an interchange with Interstate 10.
If they can secure a meeting with the governor, commissioners plan to accompany Chairman Tullis to Montgomery in an effort to secure future funding for the upkeep and enhancement of Jack Springs Road through use of surplus Federal Access System money or FSA grants.
Every year, the county receives $500,000 in funds from the FSA, which the county has to match, to be used in secondary road projects. In rare instances, surplus money is available from these grants and the commission hopes to take advantage of any leftovers.
