The following classes are being offered by the Extension Services of Florida and Alabama. The classes are open to the public:
Prescribed Burning Workshop
The University of Florida IFAS Extension will hold a workshop on prescribed burning on Feb. 8 at Blackwater River State Forest in Santa Rosa County.
Landowners, farmers, foresters and others interested in learning about the use of fire as a management tool are invited to attend. Participants at this all-day workshop will learn why we burn, the steps in planning prescribed burns, the ecological effects of fire and safe burning techniques. There will be a field demonstration, weather permitting.
There is no charge for this workshop, and a lunch will be provided. Contact the Santa Rosa County Extension Office at (850) 623-3868 by Feb. 3 to register.
Wildlife Management Shortcourse
The University of Florida IFAS Extension will host the Master Wildlifer short course beginning Feb. 4.
Landowners, hunters, farmers, wildlife enthusiasts and others interested in learning about wildlife biology and management are invited to participate. The course will be broadcast live over satellite and delivered to downlink sites across the Southeast in seven, three-hour sessions between Feb. 4 and March 18.
Nationally known wildlife and natural resource experts from across the Southeast will present short course sessions on topics including turkey and upland game birds, white-tailed deer, aquatic areas and wetlands and species diversity. A reference manual will be provided for registered participants. There will be opportunities for discussion through 1-800 call-in lines and the Internet.
The course will be held at several locations locally. In Escambia County, Fla., the Cooperative Extension will host the series at its facility in Cantonment. Call (850) 475-5230 to register.
