Approximately two-thirds of the total population of Atmore responded to a petition drive to save the local Kmart tihs week.
More than 3,600 signatures were obtained on various petitions circulating through the area, and more than 240 letters were signed to be sent to the Troy, Mich., headquarters of Kmart corporation.
Those letters were sent by the Atmore Area Chamber of Commerce Tuesday afternoon, and they were expected to arrive by today.
Executive Director Emilie Mims thanked everyone who participated, adding that a number of volunteers solicited and collected petitions and letters to be sent. In addition, area churches included a form letter in their church bulletins on Sunday.
