One store on the list of 326 closures announced by Kmart Corporation has already been removed, giving hope to Atmore's efforts to keep its store up and running.
Last week, Kmart officials announced the closing of 326 stores and a distribution center nationwide as part of its bankruptcy proceeding plan. One of the stores on the list was the Atmore location.
Another store on the list was that of Wenatchee, Wash., which employs 64 people. Earlier this week, officials with the retailer based in Troy, Mich., announced that the store in Washington has been removed from the closure list.
The decision not to close that store was made after the company renegotiated its lease with the owner of the property the store was located on.
Officials with the city and United Corners – owners of Atmore Corners where the local Kmart is located – are currently in talks with Kmart officials to see if some type of renegotiation could be worked out.
