The Escambia County High School Blue Devils are 15-6 thus far in the season and are hungrily looking toward their chance to wrap up the year with an area title.
"The kids are playing extremely hard right now. We're still doing some things that are fundamentally unsound, but we're definitly in contention for the area title," ECHS Head Coach Brent Orso said.
The Blue Devils have defeated several top tier area teams but have a tough schedule left to play.
"Wilcox is our biggest competitor right now. They beat us by one last time and we're heading down there next," Orso said.
Early in the season the team was still struggling to find leadership and direction. That problem seems to be solved.
"Layton Knight and Kenneth Johnson, both seniors, have really stepped up to leadership roles," Orso said.
"I moved Jerry McCants and Lorenzo Arnold up from JV to help us. Jerry is one of the better area players. He has all the intangibles. He can jump, shoot, take it to the rack and plays good defense."
The Blue Devils were 3-2 in area play as of press time. They played Monroeville on Friday and Wilcox on Saturday on the road. Result from those contests were unavailable at press time.
