Funeral services for Rayford Davis, 90 and a resident of Atmore, will be on Monday, Jan. 27, 2003 at Longmire/Jones Memorial Chapel of Turner Funeral Chapel, with Carolyn Banks, pastor of Abundant Life Church of Deliverance, officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Atmore.
Viewing and visitation will be held today, Jan. 26, 2003, from 2-8:30 p.m. at Turner Funeral Chapel.
Born in Franklin in Monroe County, he had been a resident of Uriah and Atmore for many years. He worked as a paperwood laborer for Johnson Timber of Atmore for more than 30 years. He died on Jan. 22, 2003 at Atmore Nursing Center.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Cobb and Julia Davis; a daughter, Carrie Riley; and a son, Will Davis.
He is survived by his wife, Annie Ree Davis of Atmore; three daughters, Annie N. Hudson and Annie B. Sellers, both of Atmore, and Callie P. Dean of Frisco City; three sons, Charles Davis and Arsee Davis, both of Atmore, and Steve Davis of Pensacola; 31 grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren.
Active pallbearers will be his grandsons.
Turner Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Carrie "Ditty" Oliver, 85, died on Jan. 24, 2003 at her residence.

Alvin Charles Slay, Jr.

Graveside services for Alvin Charles Slay, Jr., 74, were held on Jan. 25, 2003 at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Atmore.
A native of Perdido and a resident of Daphne for the past 31 years, he was a member of the Spanish Fort Masonic Lodge #916, a veteran of World War II and a tree farmer. He died on Jan. 23, 2003 at Thomas Hospital in Fairhope.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Ruth Fraser Slay of Daphne; his son, Eddie Slay of Daphne; two daughters, Martha Slay Carroll and Rosalyn Slay, both of Daphne; his mother, Mrs. A.C. Slay of Atmore; a grandson, Mark Moore of Tuscaloosa; a brother, Norman Slay of Houston, Texas; a sister, Thelma Albert of Nokomis; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Mark Moore, Johnnie James, Jerry Cochran, A.G. James, Tom Mackey and Thomas Mackey. Honorary pallbearers were Masons.
Eastside Chapel Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Simon Theodore "Teddy" Steege

Funeral services for Simon Theodore "Teddy" Steege, 69, were held on Jan. 24, 2003 at the Eastside Chapel Funeral Home, with Rev. Doug Odom and Rev. Harrison Steege officiating. Interment followed at Pinebarren Cemetery.
A native of Baldwin County and a resident of Atmore for the past 45 years, he was a Mason, an avid fisherman and gardener and attended the Atmore Baptist Temple. He died on Jan. 21, 2003 at a Pensacola hospital.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edgar and Carlie Steege; a grandson, Russell Mack; and a brother, John Wesley Steege.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Oleda Steege of Atmore; two sons, Gerald (Sudie) Steege of Atmore and Darrell (Evelyn) Steege of Lyndhurst, Va.; two daughters, Rene' (Dana) Bunch of Crestview and Arelene (Phil) Mack of Atmore; two brothers, Harrison Steege of Tuscumbia and Bill Steege of Bay Minette; two step-brothers, Jack Sharp and Donald Sharp, both of Bay Minette; his sister, Louise Syme of Bay Minette; his step-sister, Sarah Harris of Loxley; seven grandchildren, Wesley (Destinee) Mack, Daniel Mack, Ronnie Bunch, Gerry Steege, Tabitha Steege, Nicole Steege and Alexandra Steege; and two great-grandchildren, Braiden Bauder and Skyler Mack.
Pallbearers were Paul Dortch, Doug Purvis, Jonathan Wilson, Phil Mack, Dana Bunch and Jessie Walker. Honorary pallbearers were Daniel Mack, Ronnie Bunch, Gerry Steege and Matthew Reynolds.

Mary Louise Lane

Funeral services for Mary Louise Lane, 56 and a resident of Goodway, were held on Jan. 25, 2003 at the Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home Chapel, with Brother Bob Gibson and Brother Lance Sawyer officiating. Interment followed at Sowell Field Cemetery in Goodway.
Born in Monroe County on Aug. 13, 1946 to the late Ire Lincoln and Ruth Helen Coker Flowers, she was a homemaker. She was a devoted wife for 36 years, and a sweet and dear person to everyone she met. She died on Jan. 23, 2003 at her residence.
She is survived by her husband, Wayne Lane of Goodway; a son, Christopher Anthony Lane of Goodway; two daughters, Melinda Sue Lane and Andra Strickland, both of Goodway; and four grandchildren, Rachael Strickland, Ashley Strickland, Brandon "Buck" Lane and Brandi Harris.

Bennie Lee Parker

Funeral services for Bennie Lee Parker, 57, were held on Jan. 25, 2003 at Mt. Triumph Baptist Church in Uriah, with Rev. H.P. Williams officiating. Interment followed at Uriah Community Cemetery.
A native of Uriah and a resident of Atmore for many years, he was a truck driver for Motor Carrier/Suttles Tanklines. He was a graduate of Engalewood High School in Chicago, Ill., and he also attended Walker State Technical College in Jasper. He died on Jan. 18, 2003 at Mobile Infirmary Medical Center.
He was preceded in death by his parents, O.D. Parker and Katie McIntosh. He is survived by a daughter, Mellissa Dennis Harris of Memphis, Tenn.; two sons, Bennie Angelo Parker and Kameron Maurice Parker, both of Atmore; four sisters, Patsy Glenn, Geraldean and Rebea McIntosh, all of Compton, Calif., and Jean Bullard of Detroit, Mich.; four brothers, Lane McIntosh of Compton, Calif., Andre' Parker and Tyrone McMillian, both of Chicago, Ill., and Reginald Parker of Miami; his stepmother, Mable Lyon Parker of Chicago, Ill.; his grandparents, Bennie and Mary Frye and the late Daniel and Mary Bell Parker; and seven grandchildren.
Active pallbearers were friends and family.

Funeral services for James L. Montgomery, 86, were held on Jan. 18, 2003 at Sixth Avenue Baptist Church in Birmingham, with pastor Rev. Al B. Sutton officiating. Interment followed at Elmwood Cemetery in Birmingham.
Born in Conecuh County, he was a resident of Birmingham for many years. He was a member of Sixth Avenue Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, and was retired from U.S. Steel. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He died on Jan. 13, 2003 in Birmingham.
He was preceded in death by two daughters, Claudette and Mary Alice (Louis) Barnett; a sister, Cleo P. Lomax; and thre brothers, Samuel, Herman and Tecumseh Montgomery.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret Montgomery; four sons, James (Catherine) Montgomery, Jr., of Birmingham, Harold (Deborah) Montgomery of Douglasville, Ga., Larry (Regina) Montgomery of Verbena, and Daniel (Anita) Montgomery of Mexico City, Mexico; a daughter, Jamiese (William) Jenkins of Birmingham; two sisters, Brunetta O'Neal of Toledo, Ohio, and Voncile Stallworth of Atmore; a brother, William Montgomery of Chesapeake, Va.; 16 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Lorie D. Matlock, 33 and a resident of Flomaton, were held on Jan. 24, 2003 from the Atmore Memorial Chapel, with Brother Louie Pettis officiating. Interment followed at Dale Cemetery.
She was a member of Beulah Chapel Assembly of God. She died on Jan. 21, 2003 in a Pensacola hospital.
She is survived by her husband, Wade Matlock; a son, David Matlock; her parents, Tommy and Seney Shivers of Flomaton; and two sisters, Barbara Shivers of Pearl, Miss., and Brenda Salter of Monroeville.

Edith Crawford

Funeral services for Edith Crawford, 79 and a resident of the Enon community, were held on Jan. 24, 2003 at the Enon Baptist Church, with Rev. Bob Gibson officiating. Interment followed at the Enon Baptist Cemetery.
A member of the Enon Baptist Church, she had worked as a sewing machine operator for Medline Industries. She died on Jan. 21, 2003 at Englewood Health Care.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Lilley, and her daughter, Linda Lilley. She is survived by her husband, Dean Johnson of Goodway, Ala.; two sons, Robert Lilley of Megargel and Raymond Lilley of Goodway; three daughters, Frances Mizell of Mobile, Jeanette Couch of Irvington, and Robin Blanton of Frisco City; four sisters, Elenor Josey of Excel, Tennie Fails, Ruby Raines and Bessie Brantley, all of Atmore; 15 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Preston S. Phipps

Funeral services for Preston S. Phipps, 70, were held on Jan. 19, 2003 at the Eastside Chapel Funeral Home, with Rev. Earl Harrison and Rev. Doug Odom officiating. Interment followed at Oak Hill Cemetery.
A native of Independence, Va., and a resident of Atmore for the past seven years, he was retired from the U.S. Air Force after 20 years of service. He was a member of the Odd Fellows, a mud slinging racer and a banjo player. He attended the Bridle Creek United Methodist Church. He died on Jan. 17, 2003 at a Pensacola hospital.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Anna B. Phipps of Atmore; his son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Carolyn Phipps of Independence, Va.; his daughter and son-in-law, Holly Phipps and Dennis Libby of San Luis Obispo, Calif.; two brothers, Leon Phipps of Wylie, Texas and Edgar Phipps of Galex, Va.; three grandchildren, Barbie Lawwell, Robbie Lawrence and Danielle Phipps; and two great-grandchildren, Zachary Lawrence and Savannah Lawwell.
Pallbearers were Billy Walker, Ricky Stanley, Gary Stanley, Cecil Stanley and Steven Lawwell.
