The Fort Mims Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution held its January meeting in the Stockton home of Madie McMillan, with Marian McMillan and Edith Cox serving as co-hostesses.
During the business essions, American History Chairman Conway Dickinson reported that a winner had been selected for the History Essay Contest. This winner, along with the winner of the Citizenship Contest, will be invited to the next chapter meeting to present the winning entires. At that time, certificates, pins and savings bonds will be presented.
The Chapter has forwarded the outstanding essays to the District level to qualify for advancement to state competition. The chapter extends its appreciation to all the students who participated in these contests and is proud to recognize their outstanding effort. The winning students' names will be revealed later this month.
Regent Ruth Sherrell reported that five books would be donated to the library at Perdido Elementary School. These include "Thomas Jefferson, Third President of the United States" by Helen Albee Monsell; "Meet Christopher Columbus" by James T. DeKay; "If You Lived at the Time of the American Revolution" by Kay Moore; "From Log Cabin to White House with Abraham Lincoln" by Deobrah Hedstrom; and "Julia Tutwiler, Alabama Crusader" by Roz Morris. In upcoming months, additional books will be distributed to other area school libraries.
Following the business session, Merrily Seawell was introduced as the special guest speaker. Seawell is a volunteer with the Salvation Army, and for the past 10 years she has been a volunteer Bell Ringer during the Christmas season.
After the Sept. 11 attack in New York, she volunteered to go at her own expense to do what she could to help in the tragic aftermath. She spent one week at Ground Zero working in the huge food tent where more than 1,000 workers were fed each day. Her interesting stories and dramatic photos gave the Chapter members new insight and appreciation for the volunteer workers and others who gave so unselfishly during this time of national crisis.
She emphasized that this is a great country full of citizens ready to respond to one another's needs. She especially praised the ongoing work of the Salvation Army and encouraged Americans to support the outreach of this Christian organization.
The next Chapter meeting will be held on Feb. 20 in the Atmore home of Conway Dickinson.
