Atmore Mayor Howard Shell was in Washington, D.C., this week, attending a meeting of the National League of Cities (NLC). This marks the second year that Shell has been chosen as a delegate to the meeting.
During the meetings, attendees heard from members of the Bush Administration and members of Congress on ways local governments and the administration can work together to solve problems facing cities and towns across the nation. More than 3,000 municipal government officials from around the country convened to launch an aggressive lobbying strategy to build a stronger federal-local partnership around key priorities, including keeping America safe and stimulating the economy.
In addition to participating in a series of general sessions and workshops to talk about the local priorities, delegates participated in City Lobby Day on Capitol Hill to speak with their representatives about the needs of their communities.
Attendees agreed that cities and towns need to maintain a strong voice in the nation's capital, especially in light of the economic downturns and new threats of terrorism.
The National League of Cities is the oldest and largest national organization for American cities. NLC serves as a resource to and advocate for 18,000 cities, towns and village of all sizes.
