The Escambia County Lady Blue Devils took first place this past weekend in the second annual Girl's Fastpitch Softball Tournament, held at Andalusia Sports Complex. This is the Lady Devils second year to compete in the tourney, having placed second last year.
"I feel like this is exactly what the team needed to give us some confidence. We faced two teams that will be in our area and beat both of them with ease," said Lady Devils Head Coach Christy Nall.
Escambia is on a roll thus far in the season improving their overall record to 7-2 with the weekend winning streak, posting wins against Eufaula, Northview of Dothan, Troy and Dothan. The Lady Devils star pitcher Cassie Lassiter threw for 15 strikes in the last game against Dothan and the team amassed zero errors in a strict 5-0 defensive win.
"Our goal every game is to have less than three errors," said Nall. "We had six in the first game, two in the second, and in the third and fourth game, we had zero."
With a third of the season behind them and several wins under their belt, the Lady Devils have now allowed themselves to turn their eyes a bit towards the possibility of playing for the state title at the end of the season, in May.
"Now, the girls are excited about going to state because they know if we play hard like this weekend, not many teams can beat us. Everyone got a chance to play and everyone contributed, " said Nall.
One of Escambia's goals this past weekend was to mount a good effort against archrival Troy, who they've had a lasting rivalry with. The Lady Blue Devils lived that dream out, downing Troy 5-1. Cassie threw for 11 strikeouts and the team managed zero errors.
"In seven years, I have never been able to beat them. We have come close but for one reason or another, we just couldn't get past them," said Nall.
Nall lamented on how well every team member played and was pleased to note that everyone got a chance to play in the rout.
"I just can't say enough about how well we played this weekend. We had fun and we won. That's what it's all about. We didn't play our last game until around 11:45 p.m., but the fans stayed and cheered the whole time," said Nall.
The Lady Blue Devils will be back in action this Friday on the road against the Lady Tigers of Baldwin County High School. The junior varsity squad will hit in the field in Bay Minette at 4 p.m and the varsity will suit up at 7 p.m.
