Katie May Elliott of Bradley exhibited the Grand Champion Steer in the 2003 Escambia County Calf Show, headlining a long list of local and area winners.
Clint Strickland, Corey Flowers and John Flowers, Jr., all from the Atmore area, won showmanship awards in the Junior, Intermediate and Senior Showmanship classes respectively. Flowers also exhibited the Grand Reserve Champions and won the title of County Bred Champion.
Spencer Williamson of the May Creek Community exhibited the steer that gained the most weight per day. He gained an average of 4.13 pounds per day from Sept. 21-Feb. 27.
Twenty-three calves were sold by 16 exhibitors at the premium sale for a total of $32,888.87. The average price was $1.30 per pound, and the market value of these calves is about $17,709.39. The premium buyers donated $15,179.48 to these young people.
In addition, $3,035 was distributed in cash and awards. Many of the exhibitors use the money for college funds, and the project is a long-term project that requires parents and youths to work together in care of the animal as well as promotion of the show and sale.
