Paul Keane, publisher of The Atmore Advance, announced his resignation Friday.
"This was one of the toughest decisions I've had to make in my career," Keane said.
Keane is beginning his own business in the book publishing field, editing, laying out and marketing books with Heritage Publishing Consultants. He will be working with various committees on books involving the heritage and history of counties throughout Alabama and Florida.
"The main reason for this decision was based on the needs of my family," he said.
"The fact of the matter is that I've put my family on the backburner for far too long, at least 15 years.
With my children growing up quicker than I would like, it's time for me to put them on the front burner for a change."
Keane is married to Doris, and the couple have three children, Chris, 14, Kelly, 11, and Steven, 5.
The Atmore Advance was founded in 1927. A replacement for Keane has not yet been named.
