Saturday was a day for big crowds in Atmore with a huge show of support for Melinda McGhee, the missing Atmore native from the Poarch Creek Community who mysteriously disappeared from her home on March 24.
A benefit was held from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Tiny Tots Day Care Center on Medical Park Drive on Saturday in an attempt to raise money to be used by the family for any possible reward that may be offered and in the event of financial hardships facing the family. Fried Chicken plates with all the trimmings were sold for $5 each throughout the benefit.
Approximately 750 plates were sold with donations totaling approximately $4,600, according to Janet McGhee. In addition to this amount, the Modern Woodmen of America, along with Greg Findley, the district representative to the Woodmen, will reportedly match any money raised up to $2,500.
The combined total of donations and contributions received from the Modern Woodmen of America raised $2,100 more than expected. All proceeds will go directly to the family.
The investigation into the McGhee case is still ongoing. McGhee was reported missing by her husband and investigators said that signs of a struggle were found at the residence on Kent Road.
