Ruth Brown Carden

Ruth Brown Carden, 88, of Uriah, died Saturday, May 17, 2003, in Atmore. She was a homemaker, born in Monroe County Feb. 20, 1915 to the late John and Deese Peacock.
She was a lifelong member of Semirah Springs Freewill Baptist Church.
Services were held Monday, May 19, 2003, at 3 p.m. from the Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home Chapel with the Bro. Mike Grindle officiating. Burial followed in Semirah Springs Cemetery in Uriah.
Visitation was Monday, May 19, 2003, from 1 p.m. until the time of the funeral.
Survivors include: two sons, Hubert Brown and his wife, Nell, of Atmore and James S. Brown and his wife, Mickey, of Vocation; one daughter, Earnistine Gunn and her husband, Walter, of Walnut Hill, Fla.; one sister, Lillie Bell Madison of Atmore; nine grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Bill Brantley, Troy Brown, Dr. Carlos Garner, Barry Coker, Mike Gunn and Thomas H. Brown.
Leroy Pettis

Leroy Pettis, 77, died Wednesday, May 14, 2003, at a local hospital.
He had been a native of Castleberry and a resident of Atmore for the past 26 years. He attended Fretwell Tabernacle Church.
Funeral services were held Saturday, May 17, 2003, at 2 p.m. at the Fretwell Tabernacle Church with Sister Helen Stewart officiating.
Burial followed in Oak Hill Cemetery with Eastside Chapel Funeral Home directing.
Survivors include: his wife, Annie Mae Pettis of Atmore; four sons, Allen Pettis of Castleberry, David Pettis of Castleberry, Joe Mack Pettis of Brewton and Roy Pettis of Atmore; two step-sons, Calvin Pugh of Deridder, La., and Leamon Pugh of Bay Minette; a brother, Pete Pettis of Brewton; two sisters, Ruthie Johnson of Brewton and Lorene Baker of Evergreen; 20 grandchildren, seven great-great grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.
Julian E. Drew

Julian E. Drew, 71, of Atmore died Sunday, May 18, 2003, in Atmore.
He was retired as a First Sergeant of the United States Army after serving 24 years. He received a Silver Star, two Bronze Stars and two Purple Hearts. He also served two tours in Korea and one tour in Vietnam. He was a life member of the Broad River Lodge #377 of Columbia, S.C. He also retired from Johnny Graham &Son as a boat captain.
Services will be Thursday, May 22, 2003, at 10:30 a.m. from the Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Doug Newton officiating. Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery with full military honors.
Family will receive friends Wednesday evening May 21, 2003, at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m.
He was preceded in death by two brothers: Charles E. Drew and J. Carol Drew.
Survivors include: his wife, Mildred N. Drew of Atmore; three sons, Julian Drew Jr. of Evandville, Ind., Dewitt Drew and wife, Karren, of Moultrie, Ga., and Richard Drew of Atmore; two daughters, Caroline Murgarian and husband, John, of Pensacola, Fla., and Charlotte Fillingim and Husband, Walt, of Oak Harbor, Wash.; one brother, Gene Drew of Atmore; five sisters, Gladys Soloman of Bay Minette, Ruby James, Elizabeth Weaver and Georgia Brooks, all of Atmore and Ann Sanders of Carolsville, Ga.; and 10 grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, P.O. Box 1999, Memphis, TN 38101.
Sallie Lou Booth

Sallie Lou Booth, 88, passed away Sunday, May 18, 2003, in Stanley Crossroads.
She was a native of Chunuckla, Fla., and a resident of Stanley Crossroads for most of her life. She was a housewife and mother and attended Magnolia Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her husband, Bailey Booth, and three sons, Barnett Booth, Ashton Booth and Millard Booth.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 21, 2003, at 4 p.m. at the Magnolia Baptist Church with the Rev. James Crist officiating.
Burial will follow at Magnolia Cemetery with Eastside Chapel Funeral Home directing.
Survivors include: two daughters, Bonnie (Wyman) Holt of Flomaton and Rena (Malcom) Graham of Moyeville; nine grandchildren, Karen Hammonds of Flomaton, Buffy Tharpe of Flomaton, Bailey Booth of Bay Minette, Paula Booth of Westerly, R.I., Kim Rackley of Bratt, Fla., Shellie Carden of Keego, Shane Booth of Stanley Crossroads, Holly Ethridge of Valdosta, Ga., and Pam Tidwell of Flomaton; and 13 great-grandchildren, Chris Hammonds of Auburn, Andy Hammonds of Flomaton, Jessica Rackley of Bratt, Lee Rackley of Bratt, Jennifer Rackley of Bratt, Alex Booth of Stanley Crossroads, Hunter Booth of Stanley Crossroads, Chloe Carden of Keego, Will Graham Ethridge of Valdosta, Ga., Lucie Tharpe of Flomaton, Damiom Booth of Westerly, R.I., Josh Tidwell of Flomaton and Jarred Tidwell of Flomaton.
Pallbearers will be Jack Knowles, Chris Hammonds, Andy Hammonds, Jupe Ethridge, Stan Tharpe and Tony Hammonds.
Honorary pallbearers will be Beatrice Emmons, Mary Jo Hollinhead, Susie Penton and Margie Overstreet.

Ethel E. Marshall, 88, died Sunday, May 18, 2003, at Beverly Healthcare Eastern Shore Nursing Home in Fairhope.
She was a native of Canoe and a resident of Atmore since 1947. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ima Bullard Ethridge and William E. Ethridge; her husband, John Lee Marshall Ethridge; a daughter, Helen Bailey; a grandson Phillip Marshall; three sisters, Voncile Ethridge, Rosa White and Alvie Morris; and two brothers, William E. (Ed) Etheridge and Horace Ethridge.
Funeral services will be held at Eastside Chapel Funeral Home in Atmore at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 21, 2003, Visitation will be from noon until 2 p.m. prior to the funeral with the Brother Mike Grindel officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery.
She was a member of Brooks Memorial Baptist Church in Atmore and a member of Clayton Chapter 306, Order of the Eastern Star.
The family wishes to thank her special friend and next door neighbor, Mrs. Ruby Wiggins for her years of attentive helpfulness. Thank you also to Sarah Beck and her staff at the Meadows Assisted Living Facility in Atmore for their attentiveness during her residence there three years ago. Many thanks also to all the staff members of Beverly Healthcare in Fairhope for treating her with such care and with thoughtfulness for her dignity.
Survivors include: her son, John L. Marshall (Jenette) of Cantoment, Fla.; her daughter, Patsy B. Peacock (Edward) of Fairhope; eight grandchildren, Steve Peacock (Tina), Jill Hughes (Bryan), Becky Sterndorf (Dave), Ramona Steele (Mark), Regina Burt (Eddie), Polly Bailey, Wally Bailey, Adam Bailey (Dawn); 10 great-grandchildren, Josh Burt, Jared Steele, Jessica Steele, Alec Hughes, Austin Hughes, Sabrina Peacock, Blain Peacock, Ryan Peacock, Julie Sterndorf, Hannah Sterndorf; her sister, Margie Griffith; and two brothers, Hibbert Ethridge (Celia) and Buddy Ethridge (Lou).

Shawn Quincey Lee, 27, passed away Sunday, May 11, 2003, in McCullough.
Funeral services were held Thursday, May 15, 2003, at 2 p.m. at the Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. Buddy Williams and Elder Harold Brown officiating.
Burial followed at Oak Grove Cemetery.
He was a native and former resident of Bratt, Fla., and a resident of Jay, Fla., for the past year. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and attended the Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Obie Lee.
Survivors include: his wife, Tasha Lee of Jay, Fla.; his daughters, Tori Shawn, Grace Lee and Mattie Alexis Lee; his mother, Orbineze Day, of McCullough; his brother, Paul Victor Lee of Bratt; his sister, Bobbie Jo Bradshaw of Phelan, Calif.; a niece, Kailee Bradshaw; and two nephews, Matthew Lee and Mark Lee.
Pallbearers were Will Sheets, Bobby Byrd, Robert Agerton, Travis Brown, Mark Brown and James Brown.
Honorary pallbearers were Steve Hanks, Lamont Godwin, Allen Wall, Larry Hamilton, Bill Gunner and Eric Wiggins.
