The Smart Links summer program will begin Monday, June 2, 2003, and continue through July 18, 2003, for Escambia County students in grades K-12. The six-week program will start off the day for students at 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday with Fridays ending at noon. Transportation will be provided to students at identified pickup points. Morning activities will focus on academic enrichment in the areas of reading, math , science, language arts and algebra. Afternoon activities will include the arts and recreation programs such as soccer, dance, karate, baseball, basket ball, track and field, golf and gymnastics through a partnership with the Atmore YMCA.
A nutritious lunch will be available through the Summer Feeding Program at Escambia County Hugh School. The Summer Feeding Program is available to all youth 18 years of age and under at no charge.
Registration for Smart Links will be held at the Escambia County Board of Education, 501 Pensacola Ave., Atmore, Thursday, May 22, from 4-6 p.m. For further information, call Peggy Rowley at 251-368-8979.
Programs from 8 a.m. through 3 p.m. are free and a limited number of slots are available. Piano and violin classes are offered from 3-5 p.m. and are available for a nominal fee of $20 for the six-week session.
Grades K-8
Programs will be provided at Rachel Patterson Elementary School, A.C. Moore Elementary School and Escambia County Middle School.
Morning activities are tentatively scheduled as follows:
8-8:30 a.m. – Breakfast snack.
8:30-9:15 a.m. – Reading.
9:20-10:05 a.m. – Language arts.
10:55-11:30 a.m. – Math enrichment.
1:30 a.m. through 12:30 p.m. – Lunch at Escambia County High School.
1-3 p.m. – Afternoon activities are as follows:
Rachel Patterson – Reading through the arts, soccer.
A.C. Moore – Violin art, gymnastics, soccer, basketball, football.
Escambia County Middle School – Piano, art, dance, cheerleading, soccer, basketball, football.
Grades 9-12
Academic enrichment and tutorial assistance will be available for students in grades 9-12 at Escambia County High School from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. State of the art technology labs will be used to supplement math, language arts, science and social studies tutorials. Certified teachers will be available throughout the day . Students will be released for lunch on site.
Special Camps
The Escambia County Smart Links Program and the Poarch Band of Creek Indians will sponsor a girl's fast pitch softball clinic during July.
Basketball, gymnastics, golf, dance, football and soccer camps are scheduled in partnership with the Atmore YMCA.
Technology classes and pine straw basket making classes will be held in July.
