A shooting between family members has left one Atmore man dead and another in jail, charged with murder.
According to Escambia County Sheriff's reports, a 911 call came in at 9 p.m. Friday. The caller, identified as Antony Levonne Holt, told dispatchers he had just shot someone.
Neighbors also called 911, saying they had heard gunshots from the Holt home at 275 Carolyn Drive. Officers from the sheriff's office, Atmore police, Poarch Creek police and state troopers responded to the call, according to the sheriff's report.
Capt. Chuck McMullen and Sgt. Kenny Brazile investigated the incident, and according to the report, Deputy James Lewis and Atmore police officer Chad Emmons arrived at the scene to find Joseph Jones in the street. He had been shot multiple times. Lewis took Holt into custody and Jones was transported to the Atmore Community Hospital. He was pronounced dead at 11 p.m.
According to Chief Deputy Maj. Mike Murphy, the two men were arguing about the title to a motor vehicle when the violence occurred. Murphy also indicated that alcohol may have been a factor in the incident.
The report shows that Jones, the brother of Holt's wife, drove to the Holt home with his girlfriend. The two men argued and Holt shot Jones with a 9 mm hand gun. Jones walked out into the road and collapsed, while Holt went into the residence and called 911. Jones' girlfriend was unharmed, but witnessed the shooting.
Holt is being held in the Escambia County Detention Center.
