URIAH – The Flomaton Hurricanes played J.U. Blacksher Bulldogs at Uriah Friday night and blew the home team away 53-14.
The Canes received the ball at the kick off. Alphonso Wesley ran the first touchdown for the Canes, and the point after was good, taking the score to 7-0.
When the Dawgs got the ball, Flomaton held them to four plays and forced them to punt. The Hurricanes then ran the ball in from 36-yards out for a TD, and once again the extra point was good, carrying the Canes to a 14-0 lead.
The Bulldogs ran for a touchdown, but could not make the extra point. Hurricane Brian Wesley took the kickoff into the end zone for a touchdown, taking the score to 20- 6. The Canes tried for a field goal, but the effort failed and the first quarter ended with Flomaton ahead by 14.
In the second quarter, the Canes recovered a fumble on the Dawgs' 19-yard line. They were forced to punt, but it was turned into a Cane advantage when Brian Wesley made an amazing 75-yard run for six more points. The point after was no good, and the Canes had to be satisfied with a 26-6 lead at the half.
The Bulldogs took the kick in the second half only to throw an interception when Alphonso Wesley for Flomaton came up with the ball. Brian Wesley then ran 42-yards for a touchdown but the two-point conversion was unsuccessful, leaving the score at 32-6.
The Hurricanes kicked the ball to Blacksher, only to have the Dawgs turn it over to them again. The Canes drove the ball down the field, and Matthew Mize took it in from 8-yards out. The point after was blocked.
When the Bulldogs took the kick, they did not hold it for long, as Alphonso Wesley recovered yet another Dawg fumble. The Canes took the ball at their own 35, where J.C. Williams threw the pass to Clemente Brooks for the TD. The conversion was good for two more points and with 18 seconds left in the third, the score was 46-6 with the Hurricanes on top.
To start the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs received the kickoff, but fumbled the ball to the Hurricanes. That effort came to naught for the Canes, and when the Dawgs took the ball again, it was to drive it down to the 2-yard line. With only 24 seconds left on the clock, the Dawgs took the ball into the end zone. They were able to come back and make the extra two points in a losing effort. The final score was 53-14, Hurricanes.
Flomaton had no turnovers, five penalties and one punt. The offense had more than 450 total yards, with quarterback Williams 8 of 11 for three touchdowns. Tailback Brian Wesley had six carries and returned a punt 75 yards for a touchdown. Alphonso Wesley averaged 10 yards on 11 carries.
J.U. Blacksher had five turnovers and two punts.
Flomaton, now 1-0 on the season, will play Georgiana Sept. 5 at home. Kickoff is at 7:30.
