This last week the beginning of the completion of a vision took place at Escambia Academy when a ground breaking was held to start the final phase of the new track and field complex at the school. Construction has now begun on an eight lane paved and certified 400 meter track along with venues for long jump, triple jump, high jump, pole vault, discus and shot put.
The project began several years ago when the late Preston Barnett prepared the initial design and superintended the construction of the first phase of work which included grading, fencing, drainage work and the preparation of the dirt track.
The second and final phase of the project will involve final grading and paving of the track along with the construction of the individual event areas. When the track is completed it will be certified under the National Federation of High School Standards. It is anticipated that the complete facility will be ready for use by the Cougars for next spring's track season.
