Deborah Merlene Griffin

Mrs. Deborah Merlene Griffin, 42, died Thursday at a Pensacola hospital.
Mrs. Griffin had been a native of Pensacola and a resident of Frisco City for the past 3 years. She was a member of the Excel Assembly of God Church and is preceded in death by a brother, Douglas Blackwell.
She is survived by her husband, Glenn Griffin of Frisco City; her mother Merlene Morris of Monroeville; a son, Anthony Dakota Stamper of Pensacola; a stepson, Chris Griffin of Flomaton; two daughters, Ashley Desiree Stamper of Miamisburg, Ohio and Rhiannon Nicole Phelps of Pensacola; a stepdaughter, Mandy Patterson of Flomaton; a brother, David Blackwell of Houston, Texas; two sisters, Frances Blackwell Browning of Monroeville and Sandra Hancock of Old Salem, Ala; and 3 grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday, September 22, at 10a.m. at Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. Glenn Byron officiating. Burial followed at Oak Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Billy Brantley, Randy Odom, Anthony Stamper, Timmy Dawe, Chris Griffin and Rodney Howell.

Rosa Nell Baker

Mrs. Rosa Nell Baker, 81, died Monday in Atmore.
Mrs. Baker was a native of Atmore and a resident for the past 50 years. She owned and operated Baker's Store in Canoe for 25 years and attended the Baptist church.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Leon Baker; a daughter, Jeanelle Batchelor; her parents; two brothers and two sisters.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Nola and Shirley Martin of Canoe and Judy and Grady Barnes, Jr. of McDavid; two sisters, Betty Wisener and Janet Bell Hatchcock, both of Mobile; 13 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildred and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 25, at 11 a.m. at the Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with Minister Sam Ezell officiating. Burial will follow at Canoe Freewill Baptist Church. Visitation will be Wednesday, September 24, between 6 and 9 p.m. at Eastside Chapel Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Tim Chavers, Greg Chavers, Tony Chavers, Gary Batchelor, Ronnie Batchelor, Grady L. Barnes and David Barnes. Honorary pallbearers will be: Mike Watson, Wayne Baker, Malcolm Graham, Leon Crawford and Quinton Rowell. Contributions can be made to Canoe Freewill Cemetery or flowers can be sent.

Vera Ann Butts, 53, died September 16.
She was a native and current resident of Atmore.
She is preceded in death by her parents the Rev. Willie Frank and Mary Louise Johnson and her sister, Eunice Johnson Brown.
She is survived by three sisters Mary Salter and her husband M. Lambert; Cynthia Salter and her husband Jesse, and Angelia Montgomery and husband Winston; three brothers: William George, Clarence Edward Johnson, and Marvin Earl Johnson all of Atmore; five aunts: Beatrice Johnson, Vera Dell Boggan, Alma Boggan all of Atmore; Annie Ruth Johnson of Greenville, and Mildred Lewis of Michigan; three uncles: Willie Frank Boggan of Atmore, Robert Lewis and Johnnie Lewis, both of Michigan; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends; and a special friend, "Curtis Lee Sanders".
Funeral services were held at Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church in Robinsonville on Saturday, September 20 with the Rev. Monroe Tucker, Jr. officiating. Burial was in Stallworth Cemetery.
Pallbearers were her nephews and friends and flowerbearers were her classmates.

Mrs. Ruth A. Cottrell, 72, of Century, died Saturday at her residence.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 27, at 12 noon at the Apostolic Faith Holiness Church in Century. Burial will be in the Century Cemetery in Century, FL. Public viewing will be held on Friday from 1 p.m.-8:30 p.m. at Turner Funeral home.

J. Ernest Jackson

Mr. J. Ernest Jackson,89, died Tuesday, in a local hospital.
Mr. Jackson was born in Century and had been a member of the Flomaton community all of his life. He served as a deacon, Sunday School Director and Trustee at First Baptist Church of Flomaton. He also served as a member of the Lion's Club, as a councilman and Mayor of Flomaton, and as state senator for Escambia and Baldwin counties. Mr. Jackson served on the Gulf Coast Council of the Boy Scouts of America, the Advisory Board, United Bank of Atmore and Trustee of Mobile University. Mr. Jackson was also a self-employed real estate agent.
He is survived by his wife: Mrs. Ruth R. Jackson of Flomaton; son: Dr. Robert H. Jackson and wife, Gail of Brandon, Miss.; stepson: John M. Locklier and wife Janet of Mobile; step-daughter: Dr. Judith Schneider and husband Dr. Richard Schneider of Enterprise; two grandchildren, five step-grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 24, at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Flomaton with the Rev. Dr. Robert E. Jackson, the Rev. Dr. Robert H. Jackson and the Rev. Jerry Keese officiating. Burial will be at Flomaton Cemetery in Flomaton.
Pallbearers will be: Bobby Florie, Marshall Lambeth, Dr. Richard Schneider, Jake Hart, Luke Hart and Rocky Jones. Honorary pallbearers will be deacons of the First Baptist Church of Flomaton, Harold Quimby and Johnny Hasselbrock.

Jimmy Darrin Lindsey, 37, of Atmore died Saturday.
Viewing will be Friday, September 26, 2003 from 12 noon until 7 p.m. Services will be held Saturday, September 27, at Gaines Chapel AME Church at 2 p.m.

Mr. Marvin Louis Peoples, 52, of Washington, DC, formerly of Atmore, died Saturday at Howard University Hospital in Washington, DC.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 27 at 11 a.m. at the Zion Star AME Zion Church in Atmore. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery in Atmore. Public viewing will be held on Friday from 1 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. at Turner Funeral Home.

Curtis Avis "Curt" Tennant

Mr. Curtis Avis "Curt" Tennant, 71 died Sunday in Birmingham.
Mr. Tennant was a native of Atmore, a former resident of Niceville and Valparasio,Fls. and a resident of Atmore. He is a former graduate of Esacambia County High School, one of the Barnes Boys and a 1957 Auburn graduate. He designed the Laser Guided Missile System and was head of Millimeter Wave Department at Eglin AFB. He attended the First Baptist Church of Atmore.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Alton and Florence Tennant and a brother, Dr. Harold Tennant.
Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Edith Tennant of Atmore; four sons and daughters-in-law: John and Marie Tennant of Opelika; Rodney and Hope Tennant of the U.S. Navy; Harold and Sara Tennant of Savannah, Ga. and Donald and Shayla Tennant of Dublin, Ohio ; four daughters and sons-in-law; Beverly Tennant of Charlotte, N.C.: Norma and Glen Best of Shalimar, Fla.; Karie and Richard Grant of Ft. Walton Beach and Mandy and Hooper Matthews of Atmore: his sister, Nell Thomas of Atmore; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 24, at 2 p.m. at Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. Don Davis and the Rev. Udell Mayars officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Hooper Matthews, Glenn Best, Doug Heathcock, Fred Heathcock, David Arwin, A.J. Monroe and Floyd Adams. Honorary pallbearers will be Robbie Jaye, Larry Mitchell, Gordan White, Ed Brown, Arnold Amos and Aubrey Amos.
