It may be a long way from Japan to Robinsonville, but the two had something in common Thursday.
Both felt the earth move.
Japan actually felt a series of powerful earthquakes, beginning early Friday morning.
Tremor reports came in from several residents in Robinsonville, all saying they felt the shakes about 6:30 p.m.
"It shook the whole area," said Iris Page. "We didn't have damage, but it shook the cabinets on the wall and the dishes in the cabinets."
Page said she had spoken to several of her neighbors, and while none had noticed any damage, they had all felt the quake.
Another caller said there were tremors felt in Little Rock as well.
There was an earthquake recorded in Robinsonville several years ago, said resident Gladys Helton.
"That's how we knew, because we'd had one before," she said. "This one was not so bad as it was before, but the whole house shook."
Helton said her neighbors told her their houses shook on the foundations and the ground vibrated.
Her husband, Clyde Helton, had gone to watch a grandchild at sports practice at Escambia Academy in Canoe, but they felt nothing there.
A check of the Web site maintained by the U.S. Geological Survey shows no earthquake activity in the Atmore area during the time residents reported feeling the earth tremble.
