Car damages downtown businesses

Atmore police continued to investigate an accident in which two men were injured on Main Street.
Little about the accident has been released because the investigation remains open.
What is known is that a 1999 Dodge Intrepid lost control near the intersection of Church and Main streets early Monday morning.
The car was northbound on Main Street, crossed the yellow line and struck a tree in front of the Tot Shop. It then struck a light pole, smashed a planter, glanced off Gerlach's restaurant twice, breaking windows and broke off two support posts for an awning at the Curiositiques antique store before coming to a rest in the south bound lane of Main Street. The shop suffered extensive damage as well, according to the owners, because the glassware in the window was broken and the window glass itself damaged some of the furniture on display there. The store is open for business, though as the cleanup and repair work goes on.
Atmore Police Chief Jason Dean said that
the automobile was traveling at a high rate of speed and was out of control at the time of impact. He also said two people from the automobile were injured. Other than that, he could release no information because of the open investigation.
The car was a total loss.
Workers from the Atmore Street Department were called out to help with the cleanup of debris a little after midnight and finished up around 4 a.m.
