Investigators with the Escambia County Sheriff's Office arrested an Atmore man and charged him with murder. Paderick Marshall, 29, was arrested Monday on charges stemming from an assault incident that took place on East Sunset Drive in Atmore.
A 911 call was received by Atmore Police Department on Oct. 29. The caller requested an ambulance be sent to the residence at 1206 E. Sunset Drive because a man was hurt. The medics responded to the scene and found Randy Mitchell, 30, sitting on the ground. The medics determined that Mitchell had a serious head injury and transported him to the emergency room at Atmore Community Hospital. Mitchell was later sent by helicopter to USA hospital in Mobile.
An investigation by deputies and investigators from the sheriff's office determined that the victim was an experienced mechanic and worked on cars at a garage behind the residence where the assault took place. Several men were there with Mitchell, who was celebrating his birthday while working on cars. Witnesses reported that Mitchell and Marshall began arguing and that the argument increased in intensity and Marshall picked up a piece of lumber and hit Mitchell in the head with the board.
Marshall was arrested Nov. 3 by investigators and charged with assault in the first degree. He was later released on bond.
Investigators continued to interview all of the witnesses present at the time of the assault. On Saturday, Mitchell died at the USA hospital in Mobile. An autopsy was conducted at the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences the following day.
Monday, a warrant was obtained, charging murder and investigators arrested Marshall at his residence without any problems. Marshall was set a $20,000 bond and was later released from the detention center. The case is set to go before the Escambia County Grand Jury in January.
