The Alabama Department of Transportation will be holding a public involvement meeting on the expansion of U.S. 31 between Flomaton and Atmore Tuesday.
Plans to four-lane the highway between Flomaton and Atmore will be on display for interested citizens.
The meeting will be held at the Unity Baptist Church on U.S. 31 in Atmore from 5p.m. to 7p.m.
Officials say the meeting will be an informal "walk in" presentation of the plan with exhibits on display. There will be no formal speeches or presentations during the meeting.
DOT personnel will be on hand to answer questions and discuss the project, and comment sheets will be provided.
The project to expand U.S. 31 has languished for more than 20 years.
By June of 2003, the DOT announced it intended to abandon the project after some homeowners refused to sell portions of their property for the project, and Probate Judge Devon Wiggins refused to condemn the property.
The Escambia County Commission stepped in to continue negotiations with the landowners, according to an Atmore Advance story.
More than $5.8 million in combined state and federal money was appropriated for the project last year.
County Commission Chairman Larry White said last year, "We feel like this is the right thing to do. There has been $1 million already invested into this project and it would be regrettable to leave a portion unfinished."
No timetable has been given for the start or completion of the project.
