Thursday afternoon, the Atmore police department was out tending to two separate accidents that occurred on North Main Street approximately 10 minutes apart.
The first accident occurred at approximately 3:53 p.m. at the intersection of N. Main and Liberty Street. Mary Powers, the driver of a 1992 Toyota Camry was traveling south on North Main and became stopped in traffic. Powers decided to turn left onto Liberty Street in hopes of passing the traffic. Before making her turn she was struck from behind by Jeremy Paul McCall who was driving a 1994 Ford F150.
After being struck from behind, Power's Camry traveled approximately 43 feet across the North bound lane before coming to rest on the shoulder of the road. According to Atmore PD officials, McCall admitted it was his fault. McCall told police that he seen Powers with her blinker on but couldn't stop in time after hitting his brakes. McCall was sited for driving with a suspended driver's license.
The next accident occurred at 4:04 at the intersection of North Main Street and Howard Avenue, only a small distance from the first accident. Involved in this accident was a school bus numbered D88-96 and a green 1994 ford escort.
According to the Atmore Police Department, the bus was turning left onto Howard Avenue and had not fully exited the intersection when it was struck by a Ford escort which entered the intersection. Jeanette Quick, driver of the school bus said, "I am just thankful that I did not have any children on board. I had made all my stops and was on the way to the shop." The bus had to be towed away to clear the intersection and Denise Tucker, driver of the Ford Escort was sited for not having insurance.
