Northview High School will begin the school year with several new teachers and a new assistant principal.
Mike Sherrill was named the assistant principal by the Escambia County (FL) Board of Education last week. He replaces Pam Mathis.
"I want to be the biggest Northview Chiefs fan I can be," Sherrill said. "I'm excited about being part of the whole Northview community."
Sherrill, who lives in Cantonment, comes from Woodham High School in Pensacola, where he has been for the past 18 years. He grew up in Beulah and graduated from Tate High School in Molino.
"I've only been here a week, but the faculty and support staff are great-there's a team atmosphere. It has a small town atmosphere. I'm very excited about being part of a community where everyone-faculty, staff- jump in and make everyone feel welcome. They're very friendly people," Sherrill said. "A lot of people who are in the [Escambia County, FL] school system don't know much about Northview because it is at the north end and by itself, and they're missing out. These people are so friendly that I feel like I've been given a big hug. It's the best kept secret in the school system."
Sherrill is married to Scherry and has three sons, Jesse 4, Michael, 6, and Jamie, 11. He said that being a father has given him a unique perspective on teaching.
"Having kids made me be such a better educator because I see every child as someone's son or daughter and they're precious. It's a new perception when you see that they are all someone's loved ones."
"We're glad to have Mr. Sherrill," NHS principal Gyale Weaver said. "So far he has proven to be a fast learner. He is very excited to be joining us and will be able to address areas where we need improvement. He's a welcome addition to have on board."
"I want to support the programs Mrs. Weaver has in place and help to make Northview the best place it can be," Sherrill added. "I want to be the best assistant principal I can be. I'm excited and want to do the best job I can do."
In addition to Sherrill, seven new teachers will join the NHS staff this year. Kellie Gurganus will teach English and reading, Leroy Harris will teach life management skills, world history and health and first aid, James Winters will teach math, science and TV production, Steve Tucci will teach biology, Mark Heaton will teach physical education and Karl Smith will be the Exceptional Student Education teacher. Charles Keene also joins NHS as the head football coach.
