Where were you a year ago this time? How about five years ago, ten or even 15? Let's really stretch it by saying 25 years ago, where were you or what were you doing? About 25 years ago, I was only four, and probably watching a highly educational program called Sesame Street. But seriously, think about what all has transpired in those years; things that have affected us as a town and nation. Thinking back events such as AIDS becoming a part of our lives, the Challenger explosion, the Iran Controversy and end of the Cold War has changed us forever.
These are things that one person here in Atmore has watched occur… while sitting at the same desk. Marie Davis as you read in today's paper retired after 46 years with Waller Crook and Jones. It is rare to hear anyone staying with the same company for so many years. According to the website, CareerPlanner.com, it's not uncommon for a person to have up to five careers in a lifetime.
Myself, I'm hoping for only two careers with the second being the role I fill now. Previously though I thought my future was in the Military. However, after four years I decided that it was time for my wife and I to come back home, leaving the Air Force behind us.
As I prepared to leave the Air Force, I was charged with the responsibility to train my replacement ensuring that whatever I was responsible for continued even after my departure. When I interviewed Ms. Davis she was steady at work labeling different things trying to make sure when she left things she was responsible for wouldn't be dropped or missed.
It would be hard to imagine what any company would be faced with after losing someone after so many years. The job that Davis filled could be called a couple of different things, but after that amount of time, I would suggest the word "glue" would best describe the role she filled. I don't think that I would be wrong saying that Davis probably knows that office and its practices and procedures inside and out since she has been with the firm beginning a year after her high school graduation.
But just as I felt, Davis feels it is time for a change, time for something different. So Ms. Davis as you head out in a new direction with your life I wish you the best. And remember when the days look gloomy outside, grab a book and snuggle into the fact that as you said, you no longer have to get out in it.
