Our View
Patience will likely be the watchword of the day today for Alabamians. As this editorial is written, the final result of the presidential election are unknown.
However, it is probable that, much like in 2000, the presidential election contest will be headed from the polls to this country's court system.
It is also probable that Alabama, like it has for many elections, vote strongly for the Republican candidate, this year, George Bush. Barring something unforeseen in our own state, it is likely that we will be sitting here with uncontested results, waiting to see what happens in other states.
With so much attention focused on a few contested states, it's easy to feel like Alabama is on the sideline of this race. However, with the way the electoral system works, Alabama's choice for president does count. In a race that will apparently be razor close, Alabama's nine electoral votes will count.
We ask that you pray for this country and the people involved in its governance. Pray for the judges who will likely be hearing suits and counter-suits over the most hotly contested presidential election in years.
It's what's left after you've voted and Alabama has spoken on its choice for the next president of the United States.
There will be many days after this election where we all must carry on. The country will have either reinstated the current administration, or there will be a change of power in this country, and we can all pray that it will be a peaceful one as has been the case for nearly two centuries.
