United Fund of Atmore kicked off its fund-raising drive this week, setting a goal of raising $75,000 for the 16 agencies it serves.
The beginning of this annual fund-raising event – like most everything else in our lives – was delayed by Hurricane Ivan. But the storm also intensified the need for the money generated by United Fund. Many of the agencies United Fund serves provided services during the storm and no doubt depleted their reserves. Others will meet the continuing unmet needs caused by the storm.
United Funds asks residents to pledge the equivalent of one hour's wages each month to local charities. This can be done with a single donation or through payroll deduction.
United Fund provides financial support for Easter Seals Alabama; the West Escambia Chapter of the American Red Cross; the Atmore Historical Society; Atmore Bambino Baseball; Babe Ruth Baseball and girls softball; Atmore Pee Wee Football; Atmore Tee Ball League; Atmore Public Library; Gulf Coast Boy Scouts of America; Community Service/Agency on Aging; Escambia County Cooperative Library System; Deep South Girl Scout Council; Northwest Little League; Progressive Civic and Recreational Club; Atmore YMCA; Concerned Citizens of Atmore; and Atmore Area Christian Care Ministry.
Among those services, at least one must touch the life of every person in the Atmore area. And every donation – be it thousands or just a few dollars – is a crucial part of the puzzle that once completed, will mean another success for United Fund and another year of outstanding services from the agencies listed above.
As you are approached by representatives of United Fund in the weeks and months to come, please remember the help generously provided to all of us after Hurricane Ivan and take the opportunity to give back.
