By Monday morning, the city's second ambulance service will be up and running. Joey Kelley, owner of Kelley's Ambulance, said the company passed its state inspections and received its certification to begin service.
The Atmore City Council previously approved Kelleys' request for a business permit pending the state approval.
In an interview Thursday, Kelley said he wanted to make it clear that it was his goal to offer more service to the residents of Atmore, and that two ambulance services can peacefully co-exist.
"The city will rotate calls between the two services, and we plan to go on calls with the fire department," Kelley said. "With more ambulances in service at one time, I think there will be better response times, and if one of the services is out of county transporting a patient, the other will be available to take emergency calls."
Kelley said the police department will be able to keep track of what ambulance is in service where and make the appropriate dispatching calls.
"We want to establish a good working relationship with all the emergency services, including Atmore Ambulance Service," Kelley said. "The goal is to provide high quality services to the people of this area. We'll be working together to serve the people."
